There is an unreasonable amount of work in this course for it being only 2 credits. It should be at least 3. Reading multiple long articles every week, weekly discussion posts (with responding to 2-3 peers), weekly presentations, weekly peer reviews, zoom meetings with our groups, AND additional larger assignments every few weeks on top of that is too time consuming for this little of credits. The instructions are also confusing for many of the assignments. Perhaps creating a video explaining that week's assignments would make them easier to understand the instructions and what is expected. Students should also be able to view the syllabus or modules prior to signing up for this course so they can be aware that the amount of work is not equivalent to the amount of credit hours. | Yes | 3 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 2 | 3 | 3 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 3 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 3 | - | 2 | 2 | - | - | 2 | 2 | 3 | 3 | C Laptop computer | C Ask a friend,Refer to instructions provided in the course,Search Google, YouTube, or another online source,Figure it out on my own | 1 | - | - | - | - | - | - | - | - | - | - | - | - | -
2022-02 | NURS 642 | P Other | D From 0 to 20 miles | S 6 to 10 hours | W 20 to 29 hours | 4 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 4 | 4 | C The workload for this class feels above 2 credits. I spend more time doing work for this class weekly than my other 3 credit courses. This is mostly due to the nature of the assignments. which often involve going through the module (which can take an hour +), doing readings, engaging in discussions, and creating almost weekly presentations (making a powerpoint and voice note ranging from 2-5 minutes), and peer review for many assignments. Many assignments require you to revisit multiple times a week. For example, for the first 6 weeks, when we were required to make discussion post and comment on 3 other post, we would have to wait until other people have made their post before we can do this. This is made more difficult by the fact we are assigned discussion groups so we have to wait for particular people to complete the assignment rather than commenting on the post of other classmates who may have also worked on the assignment earlier in the week. This can be frustrating as I will have to revisit the same assignment multiple times in the week; often these assignments feel like busy work. Other classes have avoided this by making the initial post due on a certain date, and responses due on another date. While I appreciate wanting to have us feel more like a class community, this class is asynchronous, which means everyone completes the modules at their own pace throughout the week. Because of this, having group work for this class doesn't feel feasible. It has been difficult for my group to find times where we are all available. Also, because we all have different schedules, some group members don't look at the modules until Sunday night and don't even realize we had group work for the week until it's too late. This leaves little time for collaboration and unequal work distribution. This can be avoided by having reminders for the following week's assignments at the end of the module from the week before; not everyone looks ahead as they should. Additionally, while the Canvas site is very organized, the assignment instructions are often unclear, luckily I have friends in the class to consult which questions, but we are often all confused or unclear about certain aspects of an assignment. In general, I think if this class remains two credits next year, it can benefit from a reduction of weekly assignments (or simplified assignments), the removal of discussion groups (or at least separate due dates for initial post and responses), and the removal of group work. | Yes | 3 | 3 | 3 | 2 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 3 | 3 | 4 | 4 | 3 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 2 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 4 | - | C Laptop computer | C Ask a friend,Refer to instructions provided in the course,Contact IT help desk services or website,Figure it out on my own | - | - | 2 | 1 | 4 | 4 | 3 | 4 | 2 | 2 | 3 | 3 | 4 | 3
2022-02 | NURS 642 | P Other | D From 0 to 20 miles | S 6 to 10 hours | W 20 to 29 hours | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | C I am enjoying the content I am learning in this class but throughout this semester so far there are a couple of issues that have come up for me. The first thing is the group aspect, while I understand the importance of having a sense of community within courses, I think it is rather difficult and strenuous on students who are in an asynchronous class. It is extremely difficult to try and find a time to meet with the members of my group to the point that we had to make a group-chat to get our assignments done since no one's schedules aligned. It is stressful trying to do an assignment especially the ones within this course through text. On top of this, the formation of the groups has led to some students in our group being completely MIA. After numerous attempts at outreach and no response other group members end up needed to take on the workload of another student. I think the group dynamic of this course should not exist. Also, it is frustrating being paired with students who prefer to work last minute when I get my work done early. Even with our past assignment, I and majority of my group got it done before the deadline but ultimately our collaborative project overall is not completed because two students didn't do what they needed to do on time. Students opted for an asynchronous course to work on the course on their own time, trying to collaborate with students who are working on their own time (which is different for everyone) is impossible. The workload for this course also surpasses my heavier 3 credit courses. I have to revisit this course multiple times hours before the deadline since a lot of students post their assignments late and it's often stressful for me. I work on this course in increments throughout the week to get it done in a timely manner in which I can still learn and takeaway but its frustrating to have to wait for other students to post their responses before I can complete an assignment. The point distribution is also incredibly frustrating. Having to complete a wiki page, review other students 'unfinished' wiki pages and then forming a response for 1 point seems like busy work. It would be beneficial for learning in this class to have one weekly/biweekly short assignment and 3 larger assignments throughout the course. In terms of the group aspect I feel it should be scrapped since this class is asynchronous and to foster collaboration the discussions should remain however the initial posts should be due on Wednesday and the peer response due Sunday so students have more time to reply to other students and not have to continuously revisit the module to complete one assignment for one point. On top of this the discussion posts and the requirement to reply to some of my peers causes me to have to look back at the module minutes | Yes | 3 | 3 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 3 | 4 | 3 | 3 | 3 | 2 | 2 | 4 | 4 | C I have struggled with clarity on some of the instructions for assignment in this course | 4 | 4 | 3 | 4 | - | 1 | 1 | - | - | 2 | - | 3 | 3 | C Laptop computer | C N/A | 2 | 4 | 2 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 4 | 4 | 3 | 4 | 2 | 1 | 4 | 2 | C N/A
